Of all the accounts of intimate encounters and deep conversations Yeshua initiates throughout the Gospels, the one with the woman at the well is one I return to time and time again.
Here’s a woman living in a patriarchal society, a culture saturated with idol worship, a sinner shunned by others who might have judged her actions far more harshly than they did their own.
Yet, Yeshua meets her deepest need, a need she didn’t even know she was trying to fill with husband after husband, and now living in sin.
Yeshua, though physically weary from His journey, strengthens her soul and spirit, sharing with her the deep truths of God.
It’s to her that He first reveals Himself as the living water, and tells her of a time ‘when the true worshippers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth.’ And through her testimony many others believed in Yeshua.
Her intimate encounter with our Lord encourages me to trust God’s love for me and remain faithful to His purpose. I might live in a society that’s unfair to women, and being an introverted spinster might mean that my views aren’t heard, but my Saviour is always there, ready and waiting to meet my deepest needs.
